Driver CPC Training with TMconsultant
What is Driver CPC?
Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a legal requirement for professional bus, coach, and lorry drivers across the UK and EU. It ensures drivers have the skills, knowledge, and competence to operate their vehicles safely and efficiently. To maintain your Driver CPC qualification, drivers must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years. This training keeps you informed of the latest industry regulations and best practices, ensuring compliance throughout your career.
Drivers with Acquired Rights
If you held a full bus, coach, or lorry driving licence before Driver CPC was introduced (10th September 2008 for bus and coach drivers, and 10th September 2009 for lorry drivers), you have acquired rights. This means you did not need to take the initial CPC qualification, but you must still complete periodic training to maintain your Driver CPC status.
Key Points for Drivers with Acquired Rights:
- No Initial Qualification Required: You received Driver CPC status automatically based on your existing licence.
- Mandatory Periodic Training: Even with acquired rights, you must complete 35 hours of training every five years.
- Stay Compliant: Completing your training on time helps you avoid fines and maintain your driving entitlement.
When Should You Take Driver CPC Training?
To maintain your Driver CPC qualification, you need to complete 35 hours of training every five years. It’s best not to leave it until the last minute. Spreading out your training over the five-year period helps you stay current with industry changes and reduces the risk of non-compliance.
Training Tips:
- Start Early: Begin your training early in the five-year cycle to ensure flexibility and avoid disruption.
- Flexible Scheduling: Complete your training in 7-hour blocks or spread it over multiple sessions.
- Stay Compliant: Early completion provides peace of mind and helps you stay compliant with industry regulations.
How and When You Receive Your Driver CPC Card
After you complete the required 35 hours of periodic training, you will receive a Driver CPC Qualification Card (often called a "DQC" or Driver CPC card). Here’s what you need to know:
- Automatic Issuance: Your Driver CPC card is automatically sent to you by the DVSA once you’ve completed all 35 hours of training.
- Delivery Time: You can expect to receive your card within 10 to 15 working days after finishing your final training session.
- Validity: The Driver CPC card is valid for five years, during which time you must complete another 35 hours of periodic training to renew it.
- Keep It With You: You must carry your Driver CPC card whenever you are driving professionally. Failure to produce it if requested by enforcement officers can result in fines.
Lost or Damaged Card? If your Driver CPC card is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can request a replacement from the DVSA. A fee may apply, and it’s important to apply for a replacement as soon as possible to avoid penalties.
